Born out of Wedlock

My 14 month old son was born out of wedlock and my Sois concerned that it will have negative effects for him throughout his life. His parents were married when he was born and he is worried that other people, including family members on his side, may look down on him or others would make fun of him because of it. I told him that I don't think it's as big of a deal as it use to be because many children are born with parents who are not married, including me. I cannot ever remember a time in my life where anyone said anything to me about it. When I told him this he said it's because I am a woman so people would be more polite and less likely to bring it up to me.

He is also saying that he wants to live a life of repentance and do right, including getting married.

What is your opinion? Is being Born out of wedlock a big deal now a days? Is it still a big deal to Christians? Is it more difficult for boys as far as being made fun of or looked down upon because of it?
