I used a mini crib which is like a small pack n play for my room but had the crib for naps so they transitioned well once they weren't in my room anymore

A bassinet can only be used for the first 3-6 months, depending on weight limit. Cribs can be used until baby is ready for a toddler bed. Personally, I would go for both, so you can keep baby close for the first few months until baby is ready for the crib. I'll be using a moses basket instead of a bassinet, and a mini crib instead of a full size crib.
