It looks really weird from the side because the lighter brown pigment around it is also raised and I'm not sure if I should consider that part of the mole?

Dermatologist says do an ABCDE check.
A- asymmetrical (same all around?)
B - border (is the border consistent) 
C- color - is it 1 color ? 
D- diameter (bigger can be more serious) 
E- evolving- is it changing ?

Your border is fishy. But it could be fine just get it checked
