do you find a white girl with box braids to be offensive and why?

I'm a white girl, I friggin love everything about box braids but I don't want to be offensive and I know white people are super ignorant to their own actions and words so I want some help to clarify this before I offend someone. I've heard a few people with strong opions but I want to hear more.

It's super cool you decided to ask first before doing it. I'm black and I've worn box braids all my life and honestly I do find it offensive. Box braids weren't cool til everyone decided it'll be cool to be black. I used to be called ghetto, ugly, unprofessional etc for having my hair braided. It's also a protective hairstyle meant specifically for black hair. I find it offensive because people treat black culture (including hairstyles like box braids) as a trend and once the trend ends my hair will still be in braids but it'll go back to being ghetto and unprofessional. Please don't do so, it's also difficult to maintain on straighter hair. The braids are heavy and if you have someone who doesn't do it right you will lose your edges.

The only reason black woman would have a problem is if you’re appropriating their culture by calling it a different name or something. Or if it was done wrong. If you get them done right and call them box braids then you’re good.

If people are getting offended over a hairstyle they shouldn’t go outside at all. Not everything is worth being offended over. The fact that you have to ask is ridiculous cause at the end of the day it’s your hair. If you like different styles of braids go for it. Remember people are always going to find things to be offended about regardless.

Not at all. Hair is hair. I feel like for some it’s culture appreciation. Also, most black women have straight hair (I don’t) and no one says anything about that but why only say something about braids? Lots of other cultures wear braids too and it’s not an exclusive black thing

White people really shouldn’t have a say in this. Box braids are a part of Black/AA culture. With that being said it’s not “just a style” and it’s very ignorant to say that. Why so many people of color have a problem with it is because they often get discriminated against for wearing such styles but when a white person does it it becomes trendy.  Hope I educated you on the matter . 💙

what about double bloods? we have colour and curly hair. its also really hard sometimes because you are literally in the middle...i do braid my kids sometimes and it looks very good on them. they are both caramel coloured with dark curls. i think it looks nice on Tricia from orange is the new black,  but if i were blonde I would not do it. its complicated and depends on the person too... maybe post a pic?
