I'm watching the first season and I see a lot of women on here talking about how people shouldn't have kids if they don't have the money. It scares me cuz I can actually see this happening in the future.

Those darn women who think you should be able to afford a life for your kids before you have one. How ridiculous is that 🙄...surprises happen and that can’t be helped but if you can’t afford a kid you shouldn’t actively ttc until you can. Really not that illogical. You don’t go buy a house without being ready to afford payments on it or a car or any commitment so a child is no different.

Yeah no. I think this show is the exact opposite of what would happen if men controlled the country again actually. Truth bomb: Most men aren’t desperate for babies, they are sex pervs (not all obviously). In a world where men ruled all, we would all be more likely to be forced to be strippers and prostitutes wearing next to nothing on mandatory birth control than handmaidens covered in cloaks being forced to birth babies.

Population control is a real thing and people are already being sterilized unknowingly because they trust their government and medicine above all else. Having multiple children is already looked down on in today’s society. Women are forced to work because they have so much college debt. Women are encouraged not to stay home and be mothers.. so in a way it is happening already, but in different ways.

So to be clear, the book is actually narrated as a man's interpretation of a woman's scattered thoughts. There's an epilogue that makes this clear and the show likely won't include it, which destroys an overarching message of the novel - in this kind of society, a woman's voice isn't even her own. Gilead doesn't exist anymore in the time that the book is being narrated from - it imploded on itself, with theories of it being due to Fred (Offred's commander). It's also a satire and was written in response to the idea that religious, totalitarian, oppressive governments that have happened elsewhere, "can't happen here"; it served as an additional response to the nation trying to return to "old values" as a response to anti-war movements and the sexual revolution. There's epigraphs (quotes of sorts) at the very beginning of the novel that spells out that this is going to be a novel of thinking - one of which comes from a master of satire, Jonathan Swift (suggested that we eat babies in a Modest Proposal). But again, the show doesn't provide us with this very telling information about the content that we are consuming.
