Baby showers

Where I am from there are not common. I looked online and saw that it’s a party when friends and relatives bring gifts for the baby. So the baby gets “showered” with gifts. My question is: can one organise their own baby shower?! Isn’t it strange to organise a party yourself and send invites for people to buy stuff for your baby? Or is it considered normal? Or, like a bridal shower, it is organised by a close friend/relative?
