(TW: Racism) Cotton Field Family Photos
Where I live, kids go on field trips to cotton fields. I am not sure if this is a wide spread thing but I remember as a child I would go and pick cotton with my class and it was really fun. I enjoyed it as an activity that I normally wouldn't engage in. We were told about slavery and educated appropriately on that matter; we also took class photos for the yearbook so we could have those pictures from our trips.
This month there have been some moms on social media that have taken their kids to cotton fields to have pictures made and the have gotten severe backlash from some people saying that using history in that way to make pictures is racist.
There is one story in particular that made some headlines when a white couple took their adopted daughter who is African American to a cotton field and had pictures made as well. However, I have seen some white families on facebook, twitter, etc. Who take the same photos of picking cotton or in a cotton field for family fall/winter photos also be called racist for using fields as a location.
