Spotting or not?

I’m still unsure how you tell whether you’re spotting or starting your period. 
How are you suppose to tell the difference?

Also, the first day of an actual flow should be charted as CD1.

Spotting is generally a drop or two of light pink, or brown blood that is usually sporadic, whereas your period is heavier, usually bright red, dark red or brown, and is a steady continues flow for 3-7 days typically.
