Collecting colostrum at 36 weeks ??

Question

Is it ok to collecting colostrum?? I was asked to do that by my gyn. I have gestational diabetes, so she wants me to collect once a day and freeze it, incase baby needs some extra fluids. I don't want to give formula, Because I want to try breastfeed.  
I did it yesterday only hand expressing, not pumping.

Collect it!! Don’t pump though because the over stimulation can kick you into labor. I started leaking colostrum at week 32 and wish I would have collected. I had an unplanned csection and it took my milk 5 days to come in. Plus our baby was 3 weeks early and had jaundice so there was a point he was soooo fussy he wouldn’t latch and therefore wasn’t eating, ugh. It was a rough time. If I had some in hand, would have made for a less stressful time.

I wish I’d had some for those first couple days of hell before milk comes in! Just remember size of babies tummy when giving those first days of life. Don’t overfeed so you can’t keep up

Fyi I was told by my nurse that BF helps reduce sugar levels. I had GD borderline (monitored by diet & exercise). And I’m 6 weeks PP now and have lost over 20 lbs. I’m EBF so I know that helps me too. Eating clean is still on my mind but I’m so hungry all the time lol must be from BF. They did not ask me to collect like your collecting. But I did hear pumping gives you contractions/labor? Not sure.

Just ask your midwife as it can cause contractions

I pumped to try and start labor with permission from my OB. Saved and froze it and recently gave it to her. It’s helpful if baby has a longer hospital stay, or it takes a bit more time to have your milk come in 😌
