The actual definition of Nationalism?

I'm an Australian and I consider myself a nationist. I love my country and I want my country to succeed in its future generations.   I believe we should prioritise our nation's people before anyone else like all nations should. The French press and its leader called nationalism a betrayal to patriotism which doesn't make sense cause they are both the same thing.

I'd argue that they aren't the same. The difference being that a patriot is proud of his country for what it does whilst a nationalist is proud of his country no matter what it does. 
But also bare in mind that there are five types ofp nationalism.
Liberal nationalism. Liberal nationalists extrapolate the liberal conclusion of individual self-determination (an individual should decide how to live his life, e.g. a free man and not a slave) and apply it to nation-states.
Conservative nationalism. They focus a lot on traditions, language, history and national symbols such as a monarchy, a flag, a national anthem etc. They want to conserve these traditions (hence the name) and thus may often be anti-immigration leading to xenophobia. An example is UKIP.
Chauvinistic nationalism (or expansionist). This is Hitler for example. His example is the most notorious and is thus responsible for giving nationalism an inherently bad name. They are characterized by a feeling of national superiority which justifies an agrresive expansionist foreign policy to conquer inferior nations.
Anti-colonial nationalism (or socialist nationalism). This is left wing and famous examples include Julius Nyerere and Mahatma Ghandi. This a nationalist movement that seeks to regain the sovereignty of a conquered nation by an imperial master.
Cultural nationalism. These are people like Plaid Cymru in Wales, which simply wish to maintain one’s culture. They put strong emphasis on language, traditional music and folklore. They see them as uniting forces which benefit the people.

Nationalism and patriotism have a very fine line in being similar... it’s a huge grey area, but no they are not “the same thing.” Incredibly similar but not the same.
Also, nationalism is NOT a good thing. I took an entire class on this. In moderation it can be okay. I would never identify as a nationalist 😬. The mentality dehumanizes people outside of your nation, and enforces hypothetical geographical barriers that determine people’s worth. 
Nationalism is such an “I’m better than” attitude, and it leads toward the causation of wars and conflicts. It has caused major wars and conflicts.
Bad is an understatement. Nationalism is detrimental to the human race.

Nationalism puts love of self and country above all else 
Which is why I agree with Macron's statement. 
I simply dont think my own country's interests are the most important, especially in today's world. We're all connected.  A free and economically thriving US depends on a free and economically thriving Europe, Canada, China, Mexico, etc

The problem with nationalism is that if you scratch the surface you often find xenophobia and a very limited idea of who the "real Australians" that need to be put "first" are. I think everyone wants what is best for their country but there are very different ideas about what that is. Is diversity of cultures and viewpoints which enrich democracy a value that's best for Australia? I think it is. Other (most often those who call themselves nationalist) would disagree and argue that 'multiculturalism is a failure' because various cultures done assimilate into "Aussie culture" but the problem with that argument is that Australian culture has never been a monolith and if countries do not evolve the stagnate and fall behind. When people say nationalism is an issue they are using the definition of nationalism "an extreme form of patriotism marked by a feeling of superiority over other countries" but the problem with using dictionary definitions is they don't capture context.

Patriotism is believing you have a duty to make your country the best place it could be. Nationalism is believing your country is already the greatest, refusing to believe all evidence to the contrary, and fighting against any influence of growth and change
