If you have dogs, do you crate them when they’re left alone in the house?

Question

I’ve had my dog for 4 years and I’ve never thought about crate training him. Hell he doesn’t even have a crate. He is left home alone for 3-4 hours a few days a week due to our schedule. We never found the house destroyed, we even recorded him for the first few weeks when he was a pup to see what he was doing while we were gone and he’d just go to sleep right after we left and move around the house to find a new sleeping spot 😂 he’s a great dog, he never chewed or destroyed anything in the house so we never thought of crate training him.

My dog was never crate trained either and I didn't realize how many people actually do it, I didn't know it was a thing haha. My dog is totally fine just roaming my apartment. He's a big dog and he's never tore up the house. Worst thing he does is open my bedroom door and sleep on my bed 😂. He rarely ever has accidents in the house too.

Both of our dogs are crate trained from when we were potty training. However, now we only have one that stays in their crate when we’re not home. Very well behaved when we’re home, but as soon as we leave, he destroys things.

I personally am not a fan of crates. 
I don’t want them in some small crate for hours. 
So, I let my two babies roam free in my house. ❤️

I have a small dog that will only hold it in if she is in a crate. I could literally be outside for 5 mins and she will have an accident. So I have to keep her in a crate.
I had larger dogs before that didn’t need to be in a crate when not at home.

I don't like to crate mine but if I dont I will come home to my house destroyed. The last time I left them out (gone for about an hour) I came home to a huge hole in the middle of my mattress. The blanket was on the floor and they had chewed straight through the sheet. They also have an obsession with trash and shoes.

Our rotties like getting in the trash so as long as I empty the trash, they don’t mess with anything. I feel safe knowing they’re loose inside the house.

1 is crated (Lab mix puppy, he’s nuts lol) the other isn’t 14 year old dachshund mix.  He literally just sleeps

Luckily we have a spare room that we haven’t done anything with yet. Eventually to be a guest room. But right now it’s just an empty room with a big window she can look out. We have a crate in there with her cushions and blankets so she can sleep if she wants. And all of her toys are in there too. She LOVES that room. She’s a destructive pup though, she gets into things the second she’s out of sight so we aren’t able to let her have the whole house yet. 😂

Not all dogs need a crate. My dog loves his crate, it's his personal space. We also got a crate for him because he is super super hyper and loves it when people are over, he can't control himself and jump all over people. So we crate him until he settles down and then he's allow out to greet them.
