6 months at the absolute earliest I will introduce water because any earlier can cause an electrolyte imbalance and/or lead to water intoxication, which can be fatal. This information is on the WHO website if you want to look more into it. Babies don’t need water until they’re eating solids (which is also recommended at 6 months by WHO, not 4). I have my masters in public health (specializing in women/children’s health, behavioral health, and child development) so I go off of WHO recommendations as they have more scientific backing than the AAP or any country-specific board.

Babies should start getting small sips of water at 6 months old, regardless of if they are formula fed or breastfed before. They do not need water until then as it can cause an imbalance of electrolytes (and also can fill their tummies and they may not potentially eat enough)

You start to introduce them to water at 6 months because that’s when they start eating foods so when they start eating food they ingest more and need help passing bowl movements. If you give a infant water you can drown them the only liquid they need for the first 6 month is there milk.

Babies don’t need water, they need formula or breastmilk. I don’t start water until they are learning to use cups and then it’s just to practice really. But I 100% breastfeed. I do believe doctors will encourage water earlier when baby is formula fed. This is a big question for your pediatrician for sure.

Around 8 months when his tummy didn’t agree with the banana baby foods.. he got constipated so I did water and tiny pit of juice to help. He ate actual bananas perfectly with no tummy problems at 10ish months. So it was the purées he didn’t like
