Does marriage counseling work?

Is marriage counseling even worth it? Has anyone went to counseling and came out with a stronger marriage?

Answer

I think it works if both parties want it to. But I also think if the relationship has deteriorated to the point where you’re practically strangers then it would be really hard at best to rebuild, but who knows? If you’re considering counseling for whatever reason, I think it’s a good sign to recognize that you may be out of your depth and could benefit from help. It also shows you’re not quite ready to give up, which is a good thing. Hope it works out!

In order for any kind of therapy to work everyone involved has to have the same goal and be willing to put in the work. Its hard, it hurts, but if you can work through it together, then yes, it will work. As a therapist there is little that I dislike more than people who come to sessions and blame everyone else and then complain that their life isn’t better. If you can’t take responsibility for your part you’re wasting everyone’s time.

I went to a marriage counselor. We had a couples session and a few individual sessions. He quit going because it was inconvenient. She told me that it would never work since he wasn’t willing to try or admit to any of the issues. I still tried for a little while longer desperate to not give up. I took a vow and I meant it. I finally left after I asked him if he was still in the marriage and the response was “We can’t get a divorce we had a Catholic wedding” Um no, God will forgive me for not staying when I’m not wanted. I’m now remarried and found my soulmate. It’s both of our second marriage and we have issues and scars, but we work them out together. If you are both willing to work on it then it’s fixable otherwise no amount of therapy will help.
