When is the best time to ask for an epidural?

I know my pain tolerance is very low. I just want to know when Is the best time to get the epidural? And with the epidural is there still pain with contractions and pushing or is it just pressure going forward. My sister said she only felt pressure when pushing out my niece.

My pain wasn’t unbearable so I didn’t ask for the epidural at all. I accepted it when they offered around 7-8 cm.  Had they not offered it I wouldn’t have even asked for it. But I loved it. Took away the little pain I did have and made for a fast smooth delivery.

after an epidural you can't use the bathroom and they come with a catheter . you can't eat, and you can't get out of bed. 
I was at the hospital since 8am and ate three good meals, walked around and moved a lot. when my water broke at 7 I was only able to make it till 10 before I got it. but it really helped me sleep through the night. 
yeah I felt just a lot of pressure when I got contractions but it running out durring pushing so that hurt like hell.

I asked for it the second I was admitted lol. I was dilated to 4 already, so they said “ok” and broke my water and gave me my epi. I felt one contraction, while being bent over getting it placed, and ohhhh lord I can tell you it was not fun. Thank god mine was placed perfectly and I didn’t feel anything after that! I had my baby 12 hours after being admitted, so it didn’t slow my progression at all.

I got one as soon as they let me which was after my water broke. They gave me 2 doses of pain meds through the IV before the epidural. Once the epidural was in there wasn’t any more pain. But I couldn’t really feel what I was pushing. I ended up pushing for 3 hours!

Typically they don’t give it till 4cm and active labor. But that could just be my hospital. I’d ask your doctor what the hospital policies are.

When you are making good cervical change is when you should get the epidural. If you do it too soon it can slow your labor down...or it could relax you enough to speed it up. Your nurse will let you know the right time. When I got mine I didn’t feel a thing but pressure once it was time to push. It really depends on the person and how well the epidural was placed. I’ve had patients that they still felt some pain...just depends
