High school classes that require you to buy things

(Remade the post because I made it way too long lol)

So in my high school I’m England we didn’t get an option for what classes we took until year 10 when we started our GCSEs.

Occasionally for classes we would learn how to make certain foods, and were expected to buy all the ingredients, we also didn’t get an option in what food we made.

If we didn’t bring the food in, we would get in to trouble, either by being shouted at or getting a detention. There wasn’t really any consideration for the students who came from poor families or anything like that. Plus most students didn’t want to spend money on food that they didn’t even like, so it would go to waste.

So my questions are

1) Should students get a choice in whether to take this class, or other classes that require buying things

2) should there be options in what food to make if the students are buying the ingredients

3) should the school just buy the ingredients instead

4) do you think it’s okay for teachers to hand out detentions for something like this?
