Cut the stem?

Michaela

Hello everyone! I bought a Lena cup a couple years ago because I loved the idea of a menstrual cup. However, I’ve tried to use it with several cycles, and each time, I have a lot of trouble getting it in and in the right position. And it HURTS. I’m not sure if I’m just tense when I go to put it in or what, but trying to get the cup in and use my fingers to try and rotate it to get it to pop open causes a lot of pain. Not to mention trying to remove it. Everything just feels tight, no matter how relaxed I am. I’ve tried using water and saliva to lube it up before inserting, and I’ve also tried different folds.

I started my period yesterday and thought I’d give the cup another shot, and I seem to have gotten it in correctly (after much struggling) but I can feel the stem. Is it ok to cut the stem completely off? How much harder will the cup be to remove if I do that? I really want to be able to comfortably use my menstrual cup, but after this long, I’m beyond discouraged. :(

Yes you can cut it off. A lot of brands suggest doing this if you dont like the stem and you will be able to get it out fine without the stem there. When you are removing you shouldnt be using the stem to pull it but just pretend you are pooping and the cup will get pushed down and then pinch the base of the cup to release the suction and then wiggle it out.If you are still having a lot of trouble just gonon youtube because there are a lot of videos of people experiences using a menstrual cup and lots of things like that. I would also suggest the website putacupinit because they have a lot of very helpful info that helped me out.Hope this helped. Xx

It is absolutely okay to cut the stem all the way off as long as you don’t make a hole in the cup in the process. That said if you are still getting used to cups I would try trimming the stem but leave a small bit behind for grip. You need to be really comfortable getting the cup out before you go all the way off or else you may wind up getting panicked if you have trouble when you go to empty it.

i cut my stem off completely. i’ve figures out how to pinch the base of the cup for removal. i also use coconut oil for insertion — water and saliva don’t cut it.

I would also suggest maybe a different cup. If you go to putacupinit.com you can take the quiz that can give you suggestions on cups that may be for your body type. You could cut the stem off. But it sounds like maybe a different brand would be better. Is it the size small or large that you have?

Maybe try a smaller size, or a different brand? It has that stem for a reason, so I wouldn’t recommend cutting it.
