Diverse patient population
Okay, this topic might blow up and make people angry. Please understand, I am not here to start a war. I want to learn and understand different cultures as there are millions.
I live in a very diverse city, multiple races, ethnicities, cultures, languages...you get the point.
I help deliver babies, I enjoy what I do. With my years of experience I have paid close attention to my patients and their support system( their family).
I have noticed that most( not all) African-American patients are very close with their friends and family. Very good support system( of course not all)They come to labor and delivery with a lot of visitors!
What has surprised my coworkers and I, is the fact that a lot of African American patients feel comfortable having their dad or brother, or guy best friend holding a leg during pushing while the vagina is open to air. I have been shocked. We also paid attention to other population but most are very modest.
I guess what I'm trying to find out is, how many of you feel comfortable having your dad, brother, brother in law, guy bestfriend holding your leg while you're pushing and your vagina is exposed? Teach me about your culture, support system. Do you want anyone in your delivery? I hope I didn't offend anyone by this post, just something we have noticed on our unit.
