Should I get a guard dog?

Hi! 
My husband has recently started traveling for business quite often which leaves with me with my one year old son alone. He’s gone about 7 days a month at this point. I feel like it would be nice to have a guard dog to keep us safe when he’s not around. We live in a pretty safe area but you never know. My husband only wants a puppy and refuses get an adult dog. Is it crazy to get a puppy with a one year old?

Dogs are great but it's not going to help if some one is actually breaking in. It may scare some people off but if some one wants to come in a do isn't going to stop them even the best gaurd dog! My husband travels for work home on weekend and I will tell you the safest I've felt is after my husband taught me how to use his gun ( all our stuff is legal ) but in my opinion with two kids and one on the way I want something that will stop some one coming in my house

I would sooner get a security system than a dog. Dogs take a lot of work- unless you're willing to commit to training a dog an hour every single day or you're adopting a dog that is already impeccably trained I wouldn't go for it. There's also a chance the dog won't like kids. You can't train that out of them.

Depends in your life. Its like a new baby so if your able to deal with training a dog and running after a 1 yr ols go for it. We have 3 dogs and they give me a good sense of security when my husband is at work. They also are very protective of my son which i love. If you do it pick a good time of year like summer so you can take dog for walks or outside a lot

I personally wouldn’t get a puppy with a one year old. They require a lot of training, and you don’t know their demeaned when it comes to kiddos. My husband passed away last week, and we have a 2 year old dog and a six month old baby. I love in a good neighborhood as well, but it does give me some security to have my dog. He is protective, moreso now than he was before. At least if he hears something (he would before me he has giant ears), I can be aware sooner and react faster.

I was in the same boat. Just get an alarm system on your house. Best $50 a month I ever committed to spending. It gives me a piece of mind and I can add all kinds of bells and whistles to make me feel even more safe!
