Nipple shield question

I see a lactation consultant again tomorrow but I had baby boy 12/1/18 at 37 weeks. I was having a hard time with him latching because of flat nipples. He was doing good with a shield but it was recommenced we supplement with formula and pump. Current routine is feed on breast with shield, then I give bottle with mix of what I pumped and formula, then I have to pump. It’s a little exhausting but I’ll do what needs to be done. It just seems like he takes a lot from the bottle after he is on the breast. My question is, is it possible to just breast feed with a nipple shield? I would like to eliminate pumping and formula if possible.
