A period is the shedding of a vascular layer in your uterus called to endometrium. The clots are just pieces of the lining that are shed. It is completely normal and the amount varies depending on the woman. 
Additional info: Before and during ovulation the endometrium will grow thicker in response to hormones. The endometrium is what a fertilized egg attaches to during the early stages of pregnancy. When your body does not receive different hormones that signal an egg has been fertilized, the skin will shed and start the cycle all over again.
