Supplementing a newborn with formula

My baby is only 24 hours old and has already lost 6% of his birth weight by day 2. I’ve been feeding him every two hours and he’s had a few wet diapers and few poop diapers.

The nurse just gave me formula to supplement but said I could hold off if I wanted to. I hate the idea of introducing a bottle so soon when ive barely established a proper latch. I feel like I’m failing my baby.

Anyone supplement with formula this early and had no problems with nipple confusion or supply? I’m freaking out a bit here.
