How many colors does your kid know? Possibly colorblind?

We have been working on letters, shapes, colors and counting for months.  He knows a lot of letters can count to 5, and has a great vocabulary, but when it comes to his colors which we have worked on more than  anything, he rattles off colors but hardly EVER gets the color right.  He will say purple, green, blue, red, brown, yellow, orange, white and black, and will repeat after us, but as much as we work on it, I would think he would be able to identify the color.  I think I have some uncles that are colorblind and I hear it runs on the moms side of the genes.  Any thoughts or suggestions?  Any way to definitively tell?  Any other kiddos having the same confusion?

I really wouldn’t think anything of it this early. We have different units at gymnastics class and we are doing colors- the class is 19 months-3.5 and it’s still much easier for everyone to point to a color than identify it! The 3 year olds are better at naming but most of the 2 year olds are like Nemat and only get it right here and there or after repeating after their parents. My sister is mildly yellow/green colorblind but never knew until a psych study in college where she couldn’t see the yellow number in a green circle. But she could certainly still name colors! They are still young and I don’t think naming colors is as important right now as learning about social interaction with other kids and adults.

My son is 23 months and he still doesn’t know colors. He can say all the colors, but can’t identify them correctly at all. He’s a smart boy.. he knows how to sing the whole alphabet and many other songs, he can even spell out his name (although sometimes he forgets a letter), and he can count to ten (forgetting a number ... usually 7)... but anyway, I think not knowing colors at this age is normal. You can always talk to his doctor, but it’s still too early, in my opinion.

Ooooooohhhh, yeah! My daughter is way ahead of all her milestones but my goodness, she is just now starting to guess the right color! For months I thought she was color blind too😂 I am pretty sure our kids will figure it out eventually!

Oh you can also do colorblind tests where they show the shape of something like a butterfly, number or other simple objects kids can identify made up of lots of circles in various shades of red and green (or other colors that are common in colorblindness issues). Color blind people won’t be able to see the object. You can google these too.

My dad was red-green colorblind (the most common kind) so I researched this thoroughly. It’s carried on the X chromosome. Women have two X’s (one from mom, one from dad), and men have one X from mom and one Y from dad. That’s why so few women are colorblind because if you have one good X it overrides the bad one - both copies have to be bad for a woman to be colorblind. So if your father was colorblind you have a 50-50 chance of passing it to your son. Doesn’t matter about your partner’s side since he gives the Y to make him a boy. It just depends on which X he got from you. Luckily our son is not colorblind. I did see some cool glasses now that can correct for color blindness - there are some very entertaining videos of grown men seeing color for the first time! Google it!
