Surrogate for best friend?

My best friend recently found out she has a very low likelihood of being able to conceive and if she does it is very unlikely she will be able to carry to term. I was wondering if anybody has any experience becoming a surrogate for someone they know? What is the process like?

One of my coworkers volunteered to surrogate for me.  I got pregnant and managed to carry to term on my own, but we got about halfway through the prep work.  
There's a lot that goes into it.  Even if the surrogate doesn't want compensation, the medical costs and legal fees were going to be about $20k. Plus the person in need covers her medical expenses, and insurance can be tricky to navigate.  Everyone involved has to do mental screening with a licensed therapist to make sure that everyone is on board.  Husbands too. Legal contracts are drawn up, and once the baby is born, you all have to go to court and surrogate legally surrenders the baby and the "parents" adopt the child.  If the surrogate changes her mind at any point, the other parents have no legal recourse.   
It's terrifying, honestly.  There is a great deal of trust between all people involved.  I will forever be grateful to my coworker for being willing to give me the greatest gift, even though I miraculously didn't need it.

More practical aspect:  you have to have already had a healthy low risk pregnancy to be considered.
