How long can a baby be in a swing?

My parents where awesome enough to get me the mama roo swing, but since it has to be plugged in it’s not super portable. I normally keep the swing close by to whatever I’m doing (Like cooking in the kitchen.) I’m a little paranoid because I have friend last who’s baby died of SIDS in a swing. How often should I check on the baby in a swing? Can I leave the room for a period of time?

Ive read babies should only be in a carseat for 2 hours at a time so I would assume the swing is the same. The main issue is their head falling forward and blocking their airway, when they're little they don't having the strength in their neck to pull their head back and can suffocate. I'd keep the baby near you while sitting up in case their head falls forward.

I refused to even buy that crap. Swings, rock n plays, bouncers, etc. aren't allowed in our home. They're hoooorribly unsafe and start really bad sleep habits as well. I'd never allow my daughter to sleep in one. And it's not SIDS that your friend's child died of in a swing. Swings put their necks in very unsafe positions which makes it very hard for them to breathe. Chances are, they suffocated.

Im so sorry to hear about your friends baby. Wow how scary and sad! I don’t know the suggested time you can leave a baby in a swing, but my husband’s niece let both of her premie babies sleep in the swing for the first year of their life after she brought them home from the hospital. Her pediatrician said it was okay because they both had reflux and it was the only way they would sleep through the night without choking.
I used to let my son nap in his swing from 2-4 months, but I had a video camera set up to watch him.

If you have a video monitor, you could set that up near her when you need to be in the other room. May give you some peace of mind. Sorry I don't know an answer to your actual question.

Baby should be supervised at all times. The max time I would leave baby in a swing would be 3 minutes to go to the bathroom. Make sure the room is blocked off from anything or anyone who can harm baby.

I have a swing and my current LO hates it. But with my oldest daughter , she was in it all the time. It was set up in the living room and I was able to see and watch her st all times.
