Please explain?

I know I should probably know this considering I am 18 years old.
But I'm confused between herpes and cold sores ?
My sister (not sexually active) has gotten cold sores . So has my mother. 
But then I'm told that herpes are cold sores ? 
I'm confused.

Cold sores are herpes 1 I believe. And yes they really are herpes. You get it from kissing, sharing water bottles etc. Most people have it and don't know. Thats why its good to get tested regularly.

Cold sores are caused by herpes simplex virus 1. Yes it is herpes. 2 in 3 people have just that strain. You can also get hsv1 on your genitals if someone performs oral sex on you while they have a sore. I have hsv1 also.
