How long should an average engagement last?

I haven't seen this topic posted on here before. I am sorry in advance to the "We've seen this a million times before 🙄" people

On average, how long should an engagement last?

If you've been dating for a number of years and finally decided to settle down, what's the point in being engaged for another 2+ years? I don't get it.

In my pov if a man proposes, he's ready to settle down, not keep you tired to him via a ring while being a fiancee for a few more years.

And to add on to that, I know of engagements that lasted years and did not end in marriage (waste of time in my opinion). And a friend that finally did get married said they felt like the guy was just "setting" because of time invested. But I'm still curious what you think
