How do I time contractions?

I’m a ftm and really don’t know what to expect. All of a sudden I started getting pain in my sides and my back hurts a little bit and my stomach is getting hard I’m 36+2 weeks pregnant

I found the bloomlife monitor really helpful. You can rent it for 20/week and it is a wearable device that works like the monitor at the hospital. It syncs with your phone and shows contractions in real time, recording their length and how far apart they are. I had an irritable uterus my first pregnancy and had pretty constant BH so having the data to show my ob was really helpful.

I start counting seconds while I load a timer. Once the contraction ends I let it add the seconds I had before I started timing.
