Why are weight estimations a thing?

It sounds like most of them end up being wrong?
If that's the case, then why do they do them? I've never gotten a weight estimation, my doc just told me that my first born is the best indicator of this boy's weight.

I totally agree. I’m in US and I think doctors like to opt for inducing and csections over everything! I just read an article about how our hospitals cause a lot of unnecessary problems and they love taking advantage of the insurance companies. I understand sometimes a women really does need to be induced and some do need csections
I’ve had 3 babies, only 1 was induced and it was awful compared to my births of going on my own. I also think there are certain times where a csection is needed but most of the time those growth scans are way off!  My first child, I went into labor on my own. They estimated him to be around 6 or 7 pounds and thought he would be kind of small. He came out 8.8. I’m a small person, they did have to help with the vacuum and I did tear but not worth having a csection, my body did what it was supposed to do. 
I failed my 1 hour sugar test (first pregnancy failing that) by a little and my doctor did not make me go take the 3 hour because I was stressing over it. He said worst case scenario is my baby would be big. Which is fine with me. 
My FIL was 12 lbs. no GD, just a big baby. His mom delivered him all natural! I think that’s a pretty big baby, but her body did what it was supposed to do.

I think we had children decades ago LOL I have never had one either. The only ultrasound you get around here is your 20 week anatomy unless something else is wrong. 
My first two were 7lb 9oz and 7lbs 10oz. I am going with 7lbs 11oz now lol

This is my bird pregnancy and I’ve never once had a growth scan. I’m in Canada and you only get two routine ultrasounds here ... dating and anatomy (at 20 weeks). If there’s no high risk or concerns you just wing it. Haha I like it that way tbh!

With my daughter I never got weight estimate and she was 8lb 9oz. They weren’t concerned or tried to make me have a c-section. I only tore a little with her like 2 stitches. I changed ob offices for this pregnancy and they don’t tell me his weight either I guess unless you ask. But they didn’t seem concerned , I feel like this baby boy will be a little smaller then his sissy my belly was way bigger with my daughter.

I never had a growth scan with my last pregnancy. I did have to have one at 37 weeks to see if she flipped from breach position, but nothing about her size. This time around, I get one at 36 weeks. Different OB. I’m honestly not going by that because you’re right, they’re almost always off. She was 7lb 15oz, so I’m looking at probably another 8 pounder. Oh Lord!!

MOST of the time growth scans are used when something doesn't measure right in the pregnancy to rule out IUGR or with high risk pregnancies such as those that previously had a stillbirth.

I think it’s for both the clinic and mothers assurance. The weight of your first kids are usually best indicators. My first was 6.2. Second was 6.12. Both were girls. I’m preg with a boy this time and my 34 wk ultrasound showed 5.5 pounds but it could be off by a pound either way. The baby is measured in lengths either way so i think the weight just totals it out. 🤷‍♀️

This has been my concern too. So i just had a growth measurement scan and found my son to be 7.4 Lbs. (CURRENTLY @ 37 weeks). 
My doctor requested mine to be done bc my daughter was born weighting 8 lbs 6.7oz delivered via c-section at 42 1/2 weeks. (I never went into labor or felt contractions... had to be induced) 
My husband was born @ 12 lbs. and his brother was 11 lbs.  
I’m 4’11 tall. Skinny thick but small framed. So it was just for precaution since I so badly want a vbac. 
So now knowing this baby is within normal range... we can continue with our plans and there is no medical intervention needed at this time. 
I worried about finding the results. I felt like it could be inaccurate needed me to be induced or it could mess with my psyche and I’d give up bc he’d be too big to deliver.
Either way... I ended up doing the scan and I’m going to let my body do what nature intends for me to do. 🙏🏽

Yeah I didn’t have any estimates for my daughter when I was pregnant in 2009/2010 but this time around I’m getting them
