D &C ? What happens?

Question

I was told yesterday by baby had stopped growing at 4 weeks. This means I'm carrying a dead baby for the last 6 weeks. I have not had any bleeding yet. How long will it take to pass, and what are the tablets the nurse is on about me having next week? Also what is involved with a D&C? Will I have to have this?

I had mine at 12 weeks- baby stopped growing at 8 weeks. The D&C was painless. I opted for that over natural so I didn't have to wait and could have closure. I had no pain following it- just bleeding like a period on and off for about a month. It would stop for a few days and start back up. With a natural miscarriage you don't have to wait too many cycles to start again. With a D&C you need to wait 3-4 because they scrape the lining thin. You want it to build back up. The waiting to try again was difficult. That was in January for me. Prior to that I had an ectopic. Since then I had a natural MC at 5 weeks and am pregnant again 5 weeks 5 days. Praying for my miracle.

I just had a d&c 2 days ago I was 12 weeks along. My dr told me it's better when you are that far along because it's less painful and you may have a harder time passing the baby. They put my completely to sleep and I woke up with no pain at all. My experience has been good so far, not pain at all and hardly any bleeding. Although I've had some slight hormone up and downs I believe it was the best choice. It was quick and I feel I can move on now. My heart was and is so broken an now I am trying to look forward to trying again.  I'm so sorry for your loss and I hope you find peace through your experience.

I would recommend sooner as well if you haven't started on your own yet.  I lost mine at 6wk, didn't find out until 11wks, and I wanted to wait to do it naturally.  But after 5 more weeks of nothing, I finally had to get a D&C.  I didn't have any problems with the waiting and my body wasn't showing signs of infection but I had come to terms with it at that point and I was ready for it to be over.

Thanks for ur replies, how long should I leave it? And would u recommend the D&C straight off. I have read people have had the tablets but then needed a D&C as well

They will sedate you . But basically they Will dilate you , using a series of rods that gradually get bigger in size , until there's room enough for them to go in an remove the baby , and scrape the lining out so that you don't get an infection . Some doctors use vacuumes mine didn't , but I only was in pain for a day maybe . The cramps are a bitch but the thing that hurts the most is your emotional/mental state... I am so sorry for your loss

I'm sorry you are going through this. Basically you are given the choice to have a d & c or take the tablets that will induce the MC at home. With mine, I opted for d & c so that I could have the baby checked for genetic abnormalities more easily. But with my blighted ovum I just used the tablets and MC at home.
