cost of fertility testing?

Hey ladies..  my husband and I have been ttc for a year now.  I know fertility treatments can be super expensive, so I thought about just going straight for the adoption route (also expensive but if I'm gonna spend thousands of dollars, at least that way I know for sure I'll end up with a baby) but my husband really wants to have our own.  I'd like to get some testing done and go from there.  So my question for you ladies is, I've looked into treatment costs, but what did it cost you to get all the testing done?

With your first round of testing, have your obgyn do it (not a reproductive endocrinologist just yet) under your annual women’s wellness visit (pap smear, annual checkup). It will be free because all preventative stuff under Obamacare is free once a year (I.e...physical). Depending on your insurance and co-pays, the labs should be low cost or free as well since you’re doing them under the guise of a wellness exam. Let your obgyn know your plans, (they shouldn’t care as long as they get paid and put in the right ICD-10 codes), and call the day you start your next period to schedule blood draws for FSH, estradiol, and AMH on the 3rd day of your period (cycle day 3 tests), as well as a vaginal ultrasound to look at your uterine lining and ovaries. You most likely won’t even see your gyno as all you need is the techs to do it all and most offices are use to women calling for last minute appointment exactly for this. Then go in for your CD22 progesterone draw and another ultrasound (again all of this is still under a wellness visit...so free). All of this should at least give you and your doctor a guideline about where and what your body is up to regarding fertility at relatively low cost. Good luck!

Depends on your insurance and pcp. Mine primary care team does nothing to deal with TTC. We had to get a referral for a specialist and had most of the tests done at the fertility clinic. For som goofy reason they wanted certain labs to be done with my pcp so i had to get them to write an order for that. But procedures and monitoring were 100% covered but for follow ups or visits where we talk, i had to pay a copay.

All my testing was covered under insurance except for a couple of copays.

There are 13 states that require insurance carriers to provide some type of infertility coverage. Check to see if your state is one of these 13. If so, then at least the testing could be covered. Some also allow some type of coverage for treatment. Mine covers testing and treatments that go along with natural conception, they don’t cover IUI or IVF.

All of my testing was covered (20% co-insurance) and my IVF was covered once deductible met then 20%. So I think all said and done with meds we spent $3200 for a cycle and a half (first cycles cancelled mid way due to poor response)

It was around $900 for my husband and I. I had a full blood work up to check my hormones, an ultrasound to check my ovaries, and an HSG to make sure my Fallopian tubes were open. Of that $900,my husband had a semen analysis that cost around $120.

The cost of adoption is waaaay higher than fertility treatment, unless you need ivf. And with adoption the cheaper routes don’t guarantee you a child since the parent or state can change their mind at certain points. 
When I had insurance just for testing it was around $1500. Then $7000 out of pocket for the cycles timed intercourse. Waste of money. Should have paid the extra for IUIs. 
Once I had insurance the testing and treatment was minimal. Meds were a $2-3000 when I moved to injectibles.
