it depends on the prompt. some of my essays were about my work at national nonprofits, my stamp collection, cooking with my grandmother, learning to depend on others (i grew up as a latchkey kid), and my journey in navigating the professional world as a woman of colour.

Applications usually have some sort of prompt for you to work with. I think I ended up writing about my favorite book character.

mine was...bold, looking back on it. i’d spent 8-11th grades miserable, depressed, suicidal, grieving the death of my dad, hating myself for being queer, and coming to terms with my childhood sexual abuse. I never thought I’d make it to graduation, but there I was, making lists of the colleges I wanted to go to, making new friends, planning a future that I wanted to be a part of. I had a lot of built up anger at the world for trying its best to make me think I was nothing. I wrote about my spite, and how it gave me the strength to take control of my life. A risky choice - my teachers encouraged me to tone it down. But, well. I’m sure you can imagine how well that worked.
I got into all of my top choices. Honestly I think they just want you to be memorable, and demonstrate that you know how to write.

You should definitely do the common app ! They give you prompts for your essay and it’s all one essay for all the schools your applying too ☺️

The only essays i wrote were for my university of california ones. I wrote about my creativity. For example im into scary/creepy things so I wrote about how it makes me think outside the box. I wrote about my talents, why biology is my favorite subject, and why I would be an asset to campus. Get as many people to read them as possible. It helps a lot. I got into almost every school i applied to

Mine was about the overseas trip I took that helped me realize what I wanted to do for a career. I was able to tie it all together with why I wanted to go to my school by talking about how I wanted to major in Digital Media Production to become an animatic editor.
Honestly, if there’s no prompt, just talk about whatever’s important to you! Do it well and you’ll be golden. 😜👍
