I Am going for my first Pap smear today !! Does anyone have any advice????

But seriously, it’s really not bad. It’s awkward, somewhat uncomfortable, but not painful. If your doc is good, she/he will talk and distract you from what’s happening

I just had my first one done this year at 29 yrs old. I had built it up in my mind as end all be all of horror. . . It’s not. It is uncomfortable, not painful, because you’re completely exposed to your Dr. but it’s quick and my Dr. said it doesn’t have to happen annually, every 4-5 years would be fine. Fine by me.

I always find a picture in the room and look at it and usually the dr. will talk with you and that helps a lot. Just let them know it's your first time and ask if they can tell you what they are going to do before they do it. I have white coat blue coat syndrome (fear of dr.) and it's so bad that my hands and feet turn blue and purple no matter how calm I try to be. If I'm the least bit scared at the dr. office It happens. Know that the pelvic exam and pap smear are more uncomfortable mentally (embaressement because of geing in a paper gown and blanket. I get very uncomfortable with this.) than they are physically if you have a good dr. Just breath in and relax. Also if you're a virgin let them know as it may be to uncomfortable for you to do yet. You've got this and soon it may seem like no big deal. I went with my bestie to get her first pelvic exam and pap smear and she said it wasn't anywhere near as bad as she thought it would be and she wouldn't be so scared the next time. She felt it wasn't as big a deal as she had made it to be and it was over really fast.  You can always take someone with you too and it helps a lot!

Yes, relax and just breathe. It's not that bad and it's over quickly if you can relax your muscles.
