Homemade Baby Food?

Mums,
Did you make your own baby food? If so, what did you use to blend / mix the food? What recipes did you use?
We are debating making our own when babies start on foods, but not sure where to start.

I make my own. I use a food processor to puree everything. Pinterest has a lot of really good baby food ideas. That's where I started. I have started with simple things like apples, pears, carrots, squash all varieties, peas , and green beans. I do use Gerber cereals in addition to the purees sometimes. And don't forget to you can mash up bananas and avocado with a fork and add a little water to make it the thickness you want. I have recently found with avocado that you can add a little lemon juice to it and then freeze it. I make everything in batches. So I cook one time on a weekend and it lasts me a few weeks. Just remember when you first start with foods they should eat the same food for a minimum of three days in a row to check for allergy or other digestion issues. We found out our son cannot have zucchini yet because it gives him terrible gas. So when I first prepare new foods for him I am very careful to wash everything in between pureeing it or cooking it so there is no cross-contamination. That makes things a bit time consuming but at least I know everything has been separated. The second time I made him apples and pears etc I knew he could eat all of them so I didn't have to be as careful. When I am done pureeing them I put them in ice cube trays and freeze them. The next day I put them in labeled freezer bags and like I said they last me a few weeks. It makes it very easy to just pop out a few cubes at meal time. I read somewhere that 1 regular sized ice cube is about equivalent to 1 oz a food. When he first started eating that was about all we needed. Now he is up to me 3 to 4 a meal. We are now getting ready to start him on meat I'm hoping it goes as easily as the fruits and vegetables have. And don't be afraid to be creative. I never would have thought to give my son blackberries until I saw a my friend feed her baby some. And he absolutely loves them. Check with your pediatrician about allergy foods like peanut butter and eggs. Mine advised that the sooner the better is the new thought. So we started at 6 months with allergy foods when he started eating other food around 5. Good luck I hope you enjoyed it as much as I do. There is something wonderful about seeing him taking the first bite of something I made him and enjoy it.

They do make baby food recipe books, libraries have them, internet too. I have a baby bullet.
I started with simple like
-Apples, boil, puree.
-Sweet potatoes, boil,  puree.
-Avacado mashed
-green beans cook, puree.
- Banana mashed very well
- Carrots, cooked, puree.
You may need to add water for different thickness depending what baby likes. I slowly made it thicker and by 7months I did lead weaning. :)

I steamed them all and used a food processor, added water to get to proper consistency. Started with mashed banana, steamed sweet potato, steamed pears, carrots, etc.

We made our own with my daughter(I was a stay at home mom). So in the beginning I just did one at a time. Then added things to each other as we went. The list the pediatrician gives you is how we decided what to make.

I did. Honestly it isn’t that hard. I mashed bananas and avocado with a fork. I plan on boiling or steaming hard veggies and fruit next. I have a list of items. I cross off one food every 3-4 days until he’s tried them all. Then after a few safe foods, I’ll mix them together. In 6 months he’ll be eating what we eat so it’s easy

I puréed different fruits and veggies for two weeks and froze them all in silicone freezer trays before I found out my son didn’t like purees. After trying and failing with purees we started doing BLW at 6 months and he was much happier.

I used a food processor or a fork for really soft things. I don’t do early feeding so when I started the babies were about 6.5 months and could handle a little banana lump here and there.

Great thread! I would love to do this. When I babysit, the parents send me food that is so unhealthy! I see 1yo eating highly processed foods, juices that are less than 10% juice and all sugar.
