Dogs are a lifetime commitment, you can have a dog outside if need be they do not need to be in the house. This decision needs to be made when you get the dog do research some breeds are not good with kids you should know that. Also it’s important to expose your dog to all sorts of environments as it’s growing up, such as meeting children so they know how to act around them. If they are trained and socialised right it’s rarely an issue.
My grandparents had a German Shepard when we were young they are typically know to be aggressive at times if not trained right. She was and as a young child 2-3 we could be alone with her she would never be aggressive, as kids who would pull her tail and be silly with her we were never bitten as she was trained right.

I understand the whole "I have to make the best decision for my child's safety" thing and it's correct. You should always supervise your child and dog together and not let anything happen to them. But you also owe the dog a chance, as you adopted him and made the lifelong commitment there as well. Things like children and family life need to be take. Into consideration before you bring a dog into the household. It's sad seeing so many dogs put into shelters because there was planning ahead. If you can afford it, hire a trainer and do what you can to solve the problem before giving up. There is tons of resources online as well that can give you great advice and ways to help your dog adjust

Definitely keep the dog away from the baby even outside... try to train him properly with treats, show it right and wrongs. Give it a month or two if no improvement then rehome to someone else who may be able to train him.
