Non-traditional Wedding Gift?

Question

I'm going to be a bridesmaid for a friend of mine. 
1. Is it customary for me to give a gift?
2. If so, does it have to be from the registry? I'd rather give something more personal. Like make her a crocheted blanket, or canned foods/preserves. 
I don't have a lot of money and she knows this (so if I bought from the registry it would have to be something in the $30 range which doesn't leave a lot of options)

I don't think wedding party is generally expected to give gifts. In most cases they already "gifted" the bride by buying their own dresses, and they've given their time to help plan/set up, etc. It's typically the bride that gives her bridesmaids a personal gift, just like the groom generally gifts his groomsmen.

Our wedding party got us gifts at the shower and $ for the wedding. A homemade gift would be really cool and a great idea

Even being in weddings I've gotten them a gift, even if it was a cheap item from registry. And my suggestion for baby/wedding gifts, if you want to give them something off of the registry, fine, but also get something from their list

My brother is an amazing cook and my husband always joked that he would pay him to cook for us.... So my brother made a HUGE basket of homemade sauce marinades, rubs, 4 different flavor a of homemade hummus, pesto sauce also nag with pasta and other cooking supplies .... Etc. he put instructions and recipes attached to each jar and left it for us on our counter when we returned from our honeymoon

Something from the heart that means something to her. I wouldn't do caned food anything. Can do a gift basket for honeymoon or even candles. But DONT show up empty handed. Trust me, other maids will talk and like my horrible mistake, two didn't so no ladies night out

My MOH honor got me & her tickets to a concert and got my hubby two tickets to a concert he wanted to go to himself for our wedding gifts. We didn't get any gifts from any of the rest of the bridal party, and we were perfectly fine with that. It doesn't matter to most brides or grooms if they get gifts or not. And I'd always love a homemade gift or a more personal gift than something someone went out & spent a lot on.

I always get something small for the wedding gift. If they are going on a honeymoon right away it's always nice to have a little gift basket sent to their room. We did that for one of my really close friends but all the bridesmaids went in on it.

Whatever you would like to give her, and can afford comfortably. You are also paying for the dress, I presume? I didn't pick anything from the registry for my best friend's wedding gift.

For my wedding & when I was a bridesmaid we did t expect the wedding party to give us anything. I know they already spent a lot of time & money on us & it meant more to me for them to share my special day. 
I know when I was a bridesmaid I probably spent around 800.00 for everything

My maid of honor was also my hairstylist! She did a great job, and it was a perfect wedding gift! I really appreciated that she did that for me for free. Being so close to the bride, you have a good idea of what she may want, need, or enjoy. Give her what you can reasonably afford.
