How long did people wait to see a fertility specialist? Is there any downfall to going?

Is it just the cost? Is there any reason not to go?

My Ob made us wait until one year of being unsuccessful before he referred us. But he let me try clomid after about 6 months. And it was unexplained infertility. Cost was just me specialist copay until I had surgery of course. It all just depends I guess.

I have my first appointment next month, at a year of trying. My regular obgyn wanted me to wait until at least 16 months, but I don't see a reason. My insurance is awesome and I'd rather be proactive.

Hubby and I waited 14 months. We're in NC which is not a state that insurance is mandated to cover infertility. I pick and choose what and when we do things. We tried a medicated cycle of Femara (which was $3) and ovidrel (injection which was $125). I had an hsg done and it was partially covered by insurance but I still paid $700 out of pocket.

General convention is at least 6 months of attempting to conceive with no prwgnancy. Aside from cost, those doctors are painfully overbooked because of people who have fertility issues, so (at least in my view) it's something that should only be used when necessary because there are so many people with longstanding issues vying for their time. It's possible that they wouldn't even let you make an appointment if you haven't Been trying long enough. Depends on your area and how in demand they are.
