I'm not deaf, nor am I close to anyone who is, but I have a question if that's ok. I don't know sign language, but I am a server and have served customers who were deaf. At one point we had another server who did know ASL and she would show me how to sign certain things and I would do my best to communicate with the customers ie "please" "thank you" "have a nice day." Because the girl who knew ASL is gone and I now have no access to leaning signs on the spot, what is the most polite and appropriate way to ensure that my guests have a good experience? Is it rude to offer paper and pencil? Is there a better way to communicate? I really appreciate you're feedback!

I have a moderate to severe hearing loss and wear hearing aids...I'm TTC but I'm scared that my baby will come out with a hearing loss, as my brother is profound. When I was little docs told me it wasn't genetic but then why are both like this?

I'm not deaf but my mother is deaf. She was born mentally handicapped but was not born deaf. My grandmother administered ear infection medication improperly & it caused my mother to go deaf. She wears a hearing aid in one ear & is completely deaf in the other. We all wish there was a way she could learn ASL & remember it but it's too much for her because of her mental state. So we have always had to rely on her hearing aids. We don't know what we'll do when her hearing completely goes in that ear because she's unable to read or spell.
