My son has a fever that is 102.2 and he is sick and has a cold. He feels so hot when you touch him but he's sleeping at the moment. Am so worried, should I wake him up and give him some water and Tylenol? I took him to the doctor today and they said he didn't have a fever but they would be worried if his fever was higher than 100.1?

Answer

I would apply a cool cloth to the back of his neck while he is sleeping and uncover him. If he was drinking okay before his nap then he is probably okay. When he wakes give him Tylenol, if it doesn’t bring the fever down within 30 mins then head to the dr or hospital. If he seems very lethargic or in pain then also take him.
Fevers can be productive but you don’t want them to get to high or stay high for prolonged periods of time. 102 is productive, meaning the body is fighting something with heat. When it’s closer to 103 I start to treat it with meds. You can try things before meds like popsicles, cool cloths, or warm baths. Not all fevers are bad.
