Milk flow

Okay I feel like this is really weird but after spending time with a lactation specialist and our pediatrician it sounds like my little guy has trouble breastfeeding because my milk flow is too fast. I’m able to breastfeed him successfully when I use a nipple shield because he can pace himself better. When I try to feed him without it he basically chokes on milk and coughs (he latches fine but can only stay on for a minute or two before coughing) The thing is I hate using the shield, it makes feeding him a bit impractical because it’s something I need to fiddle with as he’s crying for food. When he’s done and takes himself off there’s always more milk just sitting in the shield that I have to dump into a burp rag or have soil my shirt. I also feel like the shield might be collecting air and giving him gas. Any ideas on what to do?
