Can you be a feminist and support music that's derogatory towards women?

B

I am a feminist but I also listen to old school rap and hip hop . I am conflicted whenever I listen to NWA, too short, ice cube and so on. I love that era of rap but hate the message towards women. What do y'all think? Can feminist listen to/support artists that exploit and degrade women (especially sex workers and women of color) ?

I personally don’t think it’s okay. If someone calls themself a feminist and is against negative speech and derogatory language and behavior toward women, then why listen to music and support a culture and a musical artist that feeds into that negative behavior? Why would that be okay, but someone else saying those words outside of a musical context is not okay? It seems hypocritical.

I’m a feminist. I also listen to music that is considered derogatory to women. My boyfriend is potentially a bigger feminist than I am. He also listens to that type of music. You’re not necessarily listening to music for the lyrics or because you agree with the lyrics. It’s typically the music or the beat I enjoy.

I don’t see why not. We listen, and watch things everyday that go against our beliefs, or views, doesn’t mean you support the message. I was obsessed with Toddlers and Tiaras at its peek, doesn’t mean I was going to put my children into that circus.

If this was a rule, you couldn’t do anything and still call yourself a feminist. Most music, books, tv shows, movies, and personal conversations have some sort of element of sexism. If someone enjoys rap but still takes the time to pick out the problematic lyrics (or behavior of the artist), to me that says they’re still a feminist because they’re thinking critically.

I’m not really sure gatekeeping who is a feminist or not is the best way to go about this especially basing it off of music preferences. I personally don’t like to listen to music that is derogatory towards women although I did when I was younger.

Yeah some music is really filthy, but you’re aware of it and I don’t think it makes you any less of a feminist.

I was singing to too short gangsters and strippers and I stopped and was like "damn that's messed up" I always knew it was filthy but for some reason it hit me harder today.

Yeah I agree that they can. But you don’t like the music for the message in this case and like the beats. Especially with older music there’s also the nostalgia factor so it’s understandable. I just can’t listen to songs focused on degrading women anymore personally it just makes me cringe. Lol

I personally dont think it's ok to listen to music that is derogatory to women. I choose not to listen to it, because i also dont want to contribute to the message the artist is promoting. I feel like this goes for just about anything we consume. If enough people refrain from consuming a product, that product will no longer be in demand, and eventually it will not be produced.

If the music doesn't bother you then what are you standing for?

Well I’m not a feminist and I think it’s a little hypocritical. You’re supporting an artist that degrades women yet if someone says they aren’t a feminist you’d likely jump down their throat. (Not saying you OP, just my experience with feminists in this app) How can you listen to a message that you don’t support? I cringe when I hear certain lyrics and have changed songs because of their message (not related to women). I have loved songs only to find out they’re religious and then I can’t listen to them anymore.

For example? 😬 I’m pretty careful about what I listen to. I have tiny ears in my car so most of the time we’re listening to toddler nursery rhymes. Most of the music I get to listen to is on my own is when I’m working out and most of the time it’s electronic and has no lyrics.

What about white power racist music that the neo Nazis make? Is it okay to listen to that?

Also, I have kids. I’m pretty careful about what I have on the radio.

I personally wouldn't choose to listen to that type of music. I feel like it sends a message that this language is acceptable to me. These ideas are acceptable to me.It supports artists that have these views and in turn supports more of this message being produced and distributed. If you were to get into your car with someone like your boss or someone you have a lot of respect for, is that what you want to start playing when you turn on the car?If I got into the car with a middle-aged guy and he was listening to that, I would (silently) question his view on women.Yeah, I think you can still he feminist and listen to it because we are creatures of contradictions. And sometimes we like a song even if we don't agree with the lyrics. But there's a reason you're a little uncomfortable when you think about it too!
