At that gestational age there will be a nub, boys and girls have the same, so don't rush to buy blue thinking it's a penis. However, there's an angle theory, where if the nub is aligned with the spine it's probably a girl, and if it's angled up, it's probably a boy. It doesn't become a vagina or penis for a few more weeks (14-16w at the earliest), even though sex was determined by the sperm at fertilization. :-) The only other way is the blood tests, usually done around 10w.

I really wanted to know the sex before October 21st. We are going to Illinois to visit my husbands family and his mother is going to do a shower. Apparently we won't get to know by then. I have an ultrasound Sept 14th (13 weeks). Then a regular appointment October 12th. 
I am so disappointed.
