Fasting blood sugars

M

Hello ladies! I have been diagnosed with GD based on my fasting sugars. All day my numbers are really low and perfect, but in the morning they are high.

Any suggestions on how to get them down? Any snack suggestions? This morning I was at 5.7 and the goal is under 5.3.

Thanks!!

The only snack that works for me are the Almond butter granola cups from nature valley. If I eat them about an hour before bed, my fasting glucose is always below 95! I’ve tried a bunch of other things, but this has been consistently working. Good luck!

It’s like a bar (but in a circle) with almond butter on top

Mine is the same way, but unfortunately I ended up needing insulin over night because the fasting numbers are the hardest to control with diet alone. It worked for a little while but once my hormone levels increased even more diet alone didn’t do it anymore. The numbers after meals are still fine, though. Anyway, my experience is that what works for people is very different and you basically need to experiment with different combinations (high carbs vs. high protein, late snack or not, etc.). For me early dinners with few carbs worked better than anything else, and no late snack. I also get better readings when I’m well rested (sleep more). I realize that is the opposite of what works for some other people, so it really seems to be extremely different for people. But if you read up on the Dawn Effect and the Somogyi Effect it kind of makes sense that it would be different.

Oh, and I’m now at 36+1. According to my doctor the hormones often peak around this time. It would be nice if that meant that this is as high as it’s going to go, but we‘ll see. I have decided that it’s better to give in and raise the amount than accept high numbers and possibly risk problems. So far my baby‘s size and weight are normal and I’m allowed to go up to my due date. I don’t want to jeopardize that.

I started with 8 units at night and I’m now at 14. They calculate based on your weight at first and then raise it if your numbers go over again.

I’ve just started and it’s only my fourth day so far.

I've been trying to get fasting under control too... I'm usually around 112, but last night right before bed I had about 2 cups of popcorn, and this morning I was 101. Still too high, but at least lower than I was. I'm going to keep experimenting.

I try to only eat meats before bed or cheese. Something high protein, no carbs or sugars

I’m not much help for the fasting numbers but I know in morning hours that HPL hormone is the highest so avoid milk, fruit and juice until later in the day

I take my insulin at dinner then wait an hour and half to two hours and check it, then before bed I have 1/4 cup low fat cottage cheese and about a 1/4 cup of berries then before I got to sleep I take my bedtime insulin and my fasting has been in the 80's. Fasting you just can't control and it sucks.

They have only changed mine once so far but I think they might change it again this week. I take 22 units in the morning and 26 units at night. I have 2 different kinds, if I dont watch what I eat and how much it doesnt work lol. My husband and went to dinner the other night and I had bread that they give when you sit down and then protein and a vegetable and my blood sugar was in the 200's, I took my husbands just to see what his was it was 95:/ o man darn body during pregnancy

Wow that’s really early. How much insulin do you have to take? I’ve just started and today is my fourth day. My numbers are still high as if I didn’t take insulin. So I’m still increasing the dosage. They told me to keep going up 2 units. I know it’s the fact that I don’t eat so many hours in a row due to sleeping or just not up for it even though I’m starving.

Mine are supposed to be under 80(guessing we measure differently, I’m in the US?) But they’re ALWAYS 90-99Everything else is good just like you. My dr says the fasting is a little high but not high enough for meds? Which worries me bc I already basically starve myself Cause I’m used to big portions and it’s hard eating a smaller amount. We’ll see I guess. I kinda want to be on meds so I can actually not be hungry for once.

Omg I hear you. I’m starving too! Need so much more than what they’re telling me to have. Portions are so so tiny.

I’m actually kind of a health nut and this diet is hard for me because it’s WAY more carbs than I’m used to... but I’m going to keep trucking. The things we do for our baby’s...... lol

Are you having a snack in between dinner and bed time? And make sure you don’t sleep more than 7-8 hours.

M

Also.. I sleep probably 9-10.5 hours a night 🤦🏼‍♀️ maybe I should start waking myself up earlier

Yes, I am having a snack. But I’m not sure it’s what I should be having. I had popcorn last night. (Air popped and measured). Should I have something with more protein instead? Yesterday was my first day tracking so I’m very new.

I’m in the same boat and unfortunately NOTHING I do impacts my fasting numbers. Snack/no snack, carb snack, protein snack or mixed... doesn’t matter. Even exercising was making them spike even more. Dr and endocrinology team have said that there’s not much that CAN be done that is consistently effective to reduce fasting numbers. So they suggested insulin at night only. Hasn’t been a big deal to do it, it doesn’t cross the placenta so now just working on proper dose. Metformin was another option but there are no long term studies about its effect on the baby and can be less effective than insulin for fasting numbers so I opted for insulin. I hope you find something that works for you to bring down the fasting numbers but don’t be discouraged if you can’t. It’s out of your control - it’s all placenta and taking insulin was waaaay less of a deal than I thought it would be. Good luck!

I only ever had a problem with the fasting numbers, too. When I tried to get them lower through dieting my other numbers (after meals) got so low that they told me I could totally eat more cookies/candy if I wanted. Simultaneously they put me on insulin because my fasting numbers were still getting worse. I was so frustrated to simultaneously be put on insulin and told I could eat more cookies. But it goes to show how little your diet seems to affect the fasting numbers. 🙄

It IS crazy. Luckily I was warned. 3 days of diet and blood monitoring and they were like “you’re doing everything right, it’s just the hormones” and had me get going a week later on insulin. Now just waiting to get to the right dose 🤷🏻‍♀️

It’s SO frustrating. In my initial appointment they never told me how hard it would be to get fasting numbers down. It’s crazy.

I've been trying different snacks each night to see which works best for me. So far the best is a serving of Greek yogurt and chugging a glass of water.I've also been walking for 30 minutes before dinner and my numbers have been lower each night

highly suggest the book “real food for GD”...i just. read it and it talks about fasting sugars...my fasting sugars tend to be higher fasting too...whats helped is to eat a late night snack right after i go to sleep...the author also suggests, as hard as this might be, to wake up in the middleof the night and have a snack so in the morning, it’ll be normal, she also says that working out at least 30 mins a day seems to lower fasting sugars...i tried the eating a snack before bed amd my fasting augar went from 100 (the highest ive had it) to 89...and by snack i mean, some almonds and berries or pistachios and string cheese (something light)

its a struggle...ive been staying within normal glucose levels after meals, but fasting has been a bit higher...i guess, listen to your body and do trial and error...see what works for you

I’m going to try more protein tonight before bed and try not to sleep as long. Hopefully that helps!! I’ll keep you updated! Fingers crossed!
