Go with your gut always!

Baileigh

Hey guys, I’m posting this so other moms can know for future references. I’m a ftm and I’m so glad I went with my instincts and gut. My little guy will be a month old tomorrow. At around 2 weeks old, he started acting refluxey. He would get bad tummy pains after feedings and really burpy and sound congested while sleeping. So we started having him sleep at an angle, holding him upright after feedings, and as much during feeds that I could (we exclusively breast feed). At his two week checkup, we found out he had a slight heart murmur and our pediatrician said it’s common in newborns and they usually outgrow it so if he hadn’t at his two month checkup then he would order an echo. Well throughout the next two weeks, he started spitting up a little more and occasional projectile vomit. Friday night (January 11) he started spitting up a lot after each feed, then on Saturday it started becoming more forceful and more like vomit, then early Sunday morning (1 am) is when it got worse. He hardly slept because right after a feed, he would projectile and even hours later after falling asleep finally he would wake up and projectile all over hisself. Well Sunday evening I decided to take him to the ER because he hadn’t pooped or had many wet diapers. He usually poops 5 times a day and has several wet diapers. They did blood work, ultrasound, chest X-ray, and iv. They found that he had pyloric stenosis, a thickening that stops food from emptying his stomach. Which makes it stay full and food to be thrown up. We then got in an ambulance and drove 2 1/2 hours to nearest hospital with pediatric surgeons (children’s). During his surgery that next morning (Monday, today) they also found that he had a small hernia on the left side in his groin. So while he was under, they fixed that as well. During the surgery, they also noticed his blood pressure in his arms was really high and in his legs it was really low. So afterwards, the cardio surgeon came in and did an echo and listened to his heart. We later found out that he had a coarctation in the aorta. We found all of these things early on before they became a big issue. He is in recovery from the first surgery fixing his pyloric and hernia. The surgery for his aorta doesn’t have to be urgent. Just within next couple months probably. If I would have waited and listened to everyone else, it could have been worse and we wouldn’t have caught these things. Pyloric stenosis is often misdiagnosed and people treat it as reflux or think it’s their milk or formula. Everyone kept telling me he was probably lactose intolerant, and that it was normal for him to spit up that much. Always trust your gut and instincts, especially for your children! My little guy finally got to eat some milk (through a bottle) and only spit up a little. Prayers & good vibes for fast recovery and future surgery would be greatly appreciated! 😊
