Co-Signing?

Question

So I need a new car, and was looking into a lease. My credit is good but the thing is, I work part time as I’m also a student in university. So I applied for a car lease, and they come back and say I need a co-signer because of my income. Which my boyfriend and I predicted. 
I’m kind of conflicted though because I asked my boyfriend if he could co-sign for me, and he said he would but I have to promise to make every payment. I obviously would, I never miss any payments of mine as they do reflect my credit and I wouldn’t do that to him.  Is this a good idea? When I was telling my best friend, she was saying not to because what if we break up. We’ve been together for 3 years, and we’re engaged. The lease is a 3 year lease as well so I didn’t think it was too long but now I’m questioning it. 
Would you help your SO out like this? Is doing this a bad idea?

My bf got me a car its under his name but i make the payments and we broke up once i keep doing the payments he never told me he would take the car away but he did tell me that we should go get a letter with a notoriety saying that i was fully responsible of the car even if the car was under his name. We never went because we got back together. You might want to do that if you are worry things might go south with your bf.

I agree that itd be based on you as a couple. Youre engaged, so obviously you plan on staying together, right? I dont see an issue with it as long as you dont mind that he'll probably be reminding you about the payments every month. 
My boyfriend is the only signor on my car lease. We've been together since October 2014, living togehter since June 2015. Early last year, right after i gave birth to our son, my car broke down. I have no credit, like none at all. But he has great credit. So, we went to the car dealership, picked out my dream car (Chevy Equinox - the only car ive ever loved driving lol). I added the car to my insurance, added him as a driver also and things were great. I made the payments early every month and even paid a little more than what we were set for. In July someone ran a stopsign and totalled my car (my son wasnt in it thank god). August i got a second car with him as signor. 
Ive never paid a bill late, besides forgetting to update my card info on Netflix, ive never been short on a bill & needed to borrow money either. He was willing to have the car in his name because he knows ill make the payments and he wanted me to have something reliable to drive our son around. He does ask every month if ive already made the car payment but its not in an annoying way. He doesnt ask for like a screenshot of the receipt or anything, he just brings it up (ive been going through a lot of personal family issues so he probably thinks itll slip my mind because of everything else im dealing with). Every single time he asks, its within 24 hours of when i paid it lol.
IF something were to happen and we were to break up for some reason, id keep the car and continue making the payments. He wouldn't try to take it back from me or do anything petty like that. 
If you have any doubt about it though, maybe talk it through with him thoroughly. Make sure theres a mutual agreement on what would happen IF you two were to separate.

I think it depends. When my husband and I were engaged, we had shared bank accounts. So it’s a little different.
I’m happy that he is willing to co-sign, but it’s also I big commitment. Make sure you both know what you are doing. At the end, it is both of your decisions. If I were him, I would have you sign an agreement to feel better about it. And it might be something that you can bring up to make him feel better about the situation.

I think it depends on the couple and how devoted you are to each other. If you were to Break up as long as you pay off your car he really has no obligation. But if you decided not too it could really screw you both

Personally, I'd wait until I had enough credit to get the car myself. Craigslist has tons of used cars, and you could definitely get one and use it until you graduate and have a full time job.

If he said he would, he obviously trusts you. Plus you said you’re engaged! 
I really didn’t want to ask for a co-signer but I had no choice. My car was left me stranded multiple times. I definitely am glad that I upgraded. It’s nice to know that I have a safe way to get to and from work.
