Self inducing labor

When is it safe (if ever) to start to self induce? I'm only 36+2 so I won't be starting now but a girl friend of mine suggested I start at 37 or 38 weeks. Have any of you ever tried any self inducing tricks? If so, did they work? Do you recommend anything in particular? I'd love to hear your stories 😊

PS: I'm not interested in taking castor oil. I was hoping to hear some success stories from using other methods
