Not sure ab sex

So my boyfriend has wanted to have sex for months now and I’m on the edge. Not sure if I want to or not. I’m also scared just to see how my family would treat me and act. I’m still a virgin and not on birth control. Does having sex for the first time hurt and would you recommend it?
