Last Minute Name Problems
37+1 today, filling out hospital pre admission paperwork, induction set for 20 days from now. We've had our girl's name selected since September. Made the formal announcement and everything. We both chose it, Valkyrie Isabella, because the family name his family really wanted us to go with (Iona) was causing some conflict. His twin sister already wanted it, told me way before the pregnancy, I'm not big on recycled family names anyway, and I struggled with finding a middle name I liked to accommodate the way it sounds. We went round and round tirelessly trying to either get his sister to understand if we were going to use the name, we wanted her to be the only one to have it, or to have his parents understand that as far as we're concerned, "rights" to the name belong to his sister. It was like talking to a wall, or I guess a whole damn house as many people as there were involved.
I love his family, sweet people. Hardheaded as all get out though. Even after selecting a totally different name, they would call her Baby Girl Barnette or Iona Barnette anyway...when we visited, they asked at least 3 times if we were sure about our name. I really thought they let it go after that. But while trying to figure out when they are actually visiting this week, I get another lengthy text praying we use the name Iona to honor his mother, saying we don't have to call her by it, just use it and it would be such a great thing. And I'm just, at a loss. I'm happy with our name choice and at this point, I'm concerned they'll call her by it no matter what the birth certificate or we say because they are struggling so hard against the name we actually picked even if they do say it's pretty and they like it 🤦🏻♀️ what am I even supposed to say or do at this point?
