Trouble Breastfeeding?

Brianna

Have the baby checked for a lip tie or a tongue tie. My baby just turned 10 months old and went to the dentist for the first time a week ago. He asked several questions: did he have trouble gaining weight when he was first born? Did he take forever to eat? Was he really gassy? Did you have trouble breastfeeding? All answers were yes. My baby lost almost 10% of his body weight before we left the hospital, he was so gassy he would constantly cry after feedings until we figured out which way to best burp him, and he’d be on the breast for 30 mins to an hour almost every feeding. The dentist said it was most likely due to his lip tie, he couldn’t create proper suction and recommended surgery to fix it. I went straight home to research, I decided I needed a second opinion, I mean something surgical on my baby? Yesterday we got the second opinion, and after researching I felt more prepared. This dentist was asking more questions, around his current eating habits. Did he squirrel food in his cheek? Did he stick his fingers in his mouth while eating? Yes and yes. My son has a lip tie and also a tongue tie. I scheduled the surgery and I feel confident that my son will be fine. However, I was furious that this was not found sooner. Usually it gets caught and fixed within weeks or a month of a baby being born. As a first time mom, I had no idea. I thought that the Drs and medical professionals around me and my child would let me know if something were wrong or if I should watch out for something. We saw two lactation consultants in the hospital when he was first born, and neither caught this. His pediatrician, didn’t catch this. I feel horrible that my baby could’ve avoided so much. He’s a happy healthy boy, and he’s obviously gotten over and around his ties as he is at a healthy weight and tries to talk as best as he can, but still.
