Rectal temperature procedure - worried

When we went for our 24 hour follow up visit at our new pediatrician's office, the nurse tech took a rectal temperature. What worries me is the tech stuck a stick thermometer SEVERAL inches up my baby's anus (like 5 or 6). Is this normal??? I thought this type of temperature taking was supposed to only be max an inch? Do I need to be concerned that the tech may have messed anything up?
