I don’t start testing until I see EWCM because I experience that for 3-4 days before I get a positive OPK. 
Before getting pregnant last time my cycles were super irregular so I did go through a lot of OPKs. Because of that I bought cheap ones on amazon. 50 for 5-6 dollars. They work just as well as the expensive store ones.

If you’re not regular, you’ll need more. I had a very regular cycle and used about 7-8 a month, but I know people use a lot more.
